    Gain targeted professional development in leadership skills for educating others in outdoor environments and activities with our graduate certificate.

    Our one semester full-time graduate programme will strengthen professional development for established teachers, outdoor educators and instructors, your study will focus on the leadership skills that will enable you to bring excellence to your work.

    Combining theory and practice, most of which can be done by distance learning, you will study sustainable practice, journey-based environmental science and practical skill development and instruction in the classroom and out on field trips practicing specialist activities and skills.

    You will be required to participate in a number of field trips to locations outside Christchurch and off campus. Personal clothing and equipment are required and a list will be provided on request. Specialist equipment is provided.

    Programme structure

    To complete this Degree you are required to complete a minimum total of 60 credits. To be a full time student you need to maintain a workload of 120 credits per year. We recommend you talk with us to ensure you choose electives to benefit your future career.

    On successful completion of this programme you will be able to return to your employment inspired with best practice methods and strong leadership skills. Work in the fields of outdoor instruction, environmental education, adventure or eco-tourism, community health, recreation and youth education.

    Entry criteria

    Academic requirements

    A bachelor's degree in any field or appropriate, documented and verifiable evidence (including references) of relevant work or other experience, equivalent to three years full time in outdoor education instruction or similar area.

    Additional requirements

    • A current first aid certificate (Red Cross Comprehensive or St John's Workplace) which is current at the time the programme starts.

    Consent to Disclosure of Information

    • Successful applicants will be required to complete a New Zealand Police Consent to Disclosure of Information form depending on their placement. The form will be sent to the Police Licensing and Vetting Service, and returned in confidence to the Head of School. Information on the NZ Police Vetting Service is available from the New Zealand Police website.
    • You must be capable of swimming a minimum of 50 meters, and be able to carry a full overnight tramping pack on multi day trips. You must also provide a record of your previous leadership and personal experience in an outdoor environment.

    English language requirements:

    If English is not your first language, IELTS 6.0 Academic (no lower than 6.0 in any band); TOEFL Internet based test (iBT) Score of Score of 60 or higher (with a writing score of 18); TOEFL Paper-based test (pBT) score of 550 (with an essay score of 5 TWE); University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations - FCE or FCE for schools or CAE or CPE with a score of 169. No less than 162 in each skill; NZ Certificate in English Language (NZCEL) - Level 4 with the Academic endorsement; Pearson Test of English (Academic) - PToE (Academic) score of 50; City and Guilds IESOL: B2 Communicator with a score of 66.
