Become proficient in spoken Japanese, master the three Japanese alphabets and gain knowledge of Japanese customs and society with our intensive one year certificate.
During your studies, you will learn how to communicate confidently with Japanese speakers in a range of everyday situations. In addition, you will also develop the ability to read and write Japanese to a similar level.
Please note: This certificate is designed for people who have little or no previous knowledge of the Japanese language.
On completion of this programme you will master the reading and writing of hiragana and katakana and 200 kanji (Chinese characters). You will also learn about Japanese society and gain an appreciation of Japanese customs and values.
This is an academic course of study and time and commitment to after class study is essential for success in this programme. The programme leader will be available to discuss the programme with you to ensure it meets your needs.
This programme is intended for those whose first language is not Japanese. The Head of School will, in consultation with the relevant language specialist, determine whether you are a first language speaker.
To complete this Degree you are required to complete a minimum total of 120 credits. To be a full time student you need to maintain a workload of 120 credits per year. We recommend you talk with us to ensure you choose electives to benefit your future career.
On completion of this programme, you will have completed 1,200 hours of Japanese study and this is a sound foundation to build your language skills.
Many graduates of this certificate programme continue studying towards our Diploma in Japanese or the Bachelor of Language (Japanese). Alternatively, you might choose apply your learning, speaking it when you have the opportunity.

Evidence of literacy, numeracy and an ability to study at the appropriate level. This can be through study, work and/or life experience. Literacy and numeracy assessments are available.
English language requirements:
IELTS test - General or Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5; TOEFL Internet based test (iBT) Score of 46 (with a writing score of 14); TOEFL Paper-based test (pBT) score of 550 (with an essay score of 5 TWE); University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations - FCE or FCE for schools or CAE or CPE with a score of 154. No less than 154 in each skill; NZ Certificate in English Language (NZCEL) Level 3 with an endorsement of either General, Workplace or Academic; Pearson Test of English (Academic) - PToE (Academic) score of 36; City and Guilds IESOL: B1 Communicator with a score of 43.
