This certificate is a great way to take your first big step to becoming a music professional. You will benefit from a strong focus on contemporary music, especially live performance experience.
Music Arts is a great place to learn about and perform a variety of different music styles, including blues, reggae, hip hop/R and B, rock and pop. In the Certificate in Contemporary Music you will receive regular tuition on your chosen instrument, as well as getting the chance to form bands, rehearse and perform.
You'll get 'real world' experience working with students from other disciplines on in-house performances and in our recording studios.
Our regular guest speakers will not only educate and entertain you, but also offer valuable insight into the reality of life as a professional musician.
To complete this Certificate you are required to complete a minimum total of 120 credits. To be a full time student you need to maintain a workload of 120 credits per year. We recommend you talk with us to ensure you choose electives to benefit your future career.

On successful completion of this programme, you will be able to enter further study, including:
Bachelor of Musical Arts - subject to successful selection
Level 5 qualifications in music from a range of providers, including MAINZ/TPP
12 credits in NCEA English Level 1.
Skills for tertiary study (including literacy and numeracy) may be acquired through study, work and/or life experience. Students who can demonstrate these skills may be approved for alternative entry. Literacy and numeracy assessments are available.
IELTS test - General or Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5; TOEFL Internet based test (iBT) Score of 46 (with a writing score of 14); TOEFL Paper-based test (pBT) Score of 530 (with an essay score of 4.5 TWE); University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations - FCE or FCE for schools with a score of 162. No less than 154 in each skill; NZ Certificate in English Language (NZCEL) Level 4 with an endorsement of either General, Workplace, or Academic; Pearson Test of English (Academic) - PToE (Academic) score of 42; City and Guilds IESOL: B2 Communicator with a score of 42.
