    Summary

    If you want to study a diploma or degree and need to improve your academic study skills, this programme is for you.

    No matter what your age, if you are looking to get into study, this programme offers different pathways to best prepare you and give you the confidence to succeed on your chosen degree and diploma. Studying the programme full time involves 17 weeks of classes. You can also study part time.

    This new, New Zealand certificate replaces the following certificates at NMIT:

    • Certificate in Foundation Nursing
    • Certificate Tertiary Studies (Pathways) Level 4
    • Certificate in Counselling and Social Work

    What pathways can I choose?

    There are three pathways to choose depending on what you want to do:

    The Hauora Pathway for Health will prepare you for applying for the Bachelor of Nursing or other degree or diploma related to Health.

    Te Hapāi Hāpori Pathway for Counselling and Social Work will prepare you for the Paetahi Tumu Korero Bachelor of Counselling, the Bachelor of Social Work or a degree or diploma related to Counselling, Social Work or working with communities.

    Te Tūāpapa Pathway, open pathway, will prepare you for a degree or diploma study in Business, IT, Aquaculture and Viticulture and Winemaking or other areas.

    What courses make up the pathways?

    The programme is made of 60 level 4 credits. Two 15 credit courses are core to all pathways and are compulsory. These are marked with a C. You can then select two more 15 credit courses to make up the required 60 credits from the following pathway options:

    You are also able to select your two elective courses from any of the above pathway options to reach your total credits.

    Entry criteria

    A minimum of 40 credits at NCEA level 2 across four subjects

    Literacy - 10 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of:

    • 5 credits in reading
    • 5 credits in writing

    Numeracy - 10 credits at Level 1 or above, made up of:

    achievement standards - specified achievement standards available through a range of subjects or

    unit standards - package of three numeracy unit standards (26623, 26626, 26627- all three required).

    For applicants 20 years of age and over there are no minimum academic requirements.

    English language requirements:

    A level of English sufficient to be able to study at this level.
    If English is not your first language you should have an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall Academic score of at least 5.5 issued within the last two years with no less than 5.0 in any band or equivalent.
