    Summary

    The purpose of this qualification is to provide the mechanical engineering, construction, manufacturing, and fabrication industries, with people who have sufficient underpinning knowledge, understanding, and practical skill to work under limited supervision as operators or trade assistants within their chosen discipline.

    This qualification is designed for people already working in the industry or people intending to complete a pre-trade qualification before entering the industry.

    Graduates will be capable of performing a defined range of engineering tasks under limited supervision.

    • 2682 Weld steel in the down hand positions to a general purpose industry standard using the manual metal arc welding process
    • 2679 Join metals using the torch brazing and soldering processes
    • 20799 Demonstrate knowledge of common engineering metals
    • 2672 Weld steel to a general purpose industry standard using gas metal and arc welding process
    • 29651 Demonstrate knowledge of health and safety when welding and thermal cutting

    Career Opportunities

    Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

    • Work safely, applying an understanding of relevant Health and Safety requirements and safety culture, when carrying out engineering tasks
    • Apply basic trade related numeracy, literacy, and visualisation skills to perform engineering tasks
    • Perform a defined range of engineering tasks according to instructions using relevant materials, tools, and equipment
    • Set up and carry out a single process engineering job according to instructions
    • Apply an understanding of effective and efficient processes and principles to the engineering jobs being undertaken
    • Take responsibility for the appropriate quality of own engineering work and make corrections as required
    • Participate and communicate effectively within an engineering team

    Satisfactory Completion

    To satisfactorily complete New Zealand Certificate in Mechanical Engineering (Level 3) and be awarded this qualification the student must have successfully:

    • Achieved minimum of 120 credits in accordance with the programme schedule for the New Zealand Certificate in Mechanical Engineering (Level 3).
    • Completed required practical and theoretical programme work and assignments.
    • The student will normally be expected to complete the New Zealand Certificate in Mechanical Engineering (Level 3) full-time over one year or part-time over two years.

    Entry criteria

    School Leavers

    • NCEA Level 2 (recommended), minimum 10 credits NCEA Level 1 in both literacy and numeracy
    • Three years’ minimum secondary education
    • Desire to work in the mechanical engineering industry

    Mature Applicants

    Applicants over the age of 20 years at time of enrolment will be considered where they can demonstrate the ability to succeed in a programme.

    Language Requirements:

    • NCEA Level 3 with University Entrance, or
    • Certificate of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA), or
    • IELTS test2 – General or Academic score of 5 with no band score lower than 5
    • TOEFL Paper based test (pBT) – Score of 500 (with an essay score 4 TWE)
    • TOEFL Internet- based test (iBT) – Score of 35 (with a writing score of 14)
    • University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations – FCE or FCE for schools or CAE, or CPE with a score of 154. No less than 154 in each skill. OET at Grade C in all sub-tests
    • NZCEL3 a) To be discontinued on 31 December 2019 Level 3 (General) or (Workplace) b) Current Level 3 (General)
    • Pearson Test of English (Academic) – PToE (Academic score of 36)
    • City and Guilds IESOL – B1 Achiever with a score of 43
    • Language Cert-B1 Achiever IESOL (LRWS) with PASS.
