    Summary

    The purpose of this qualification is to provide the electrical industry with people who have introductory knowledge that underpins safe electrical installation, testing, commissioning, and servicing of electrical installations and equipment.

    Course Content: Compulsory - Students must complete 120 credits from the below Unit Standards

    • 750 Demonstrate knowledge of electrical test instruments and take measurements
    • 1204 Demonstrate knowledge of earthing
    • 5932 Demonstrate knowledge of protection of circuits from static electricity and magnetic interference
    • 15848 Demonstrate and apply knowledge of safeguards for use with portable electrical appliances
    • 15852 Isolate and test low-voltage electrical sub circuits
    • 15855 Demonstrate knowledge of circuit protection
    • 15866 Demonstrate and apply knowledge of procedures for examining and testing electrical installations
    • 25070 Explain the properties of conductors, insulators, and semiconductors and their effect on electrical circuits
    • 25071 Demonstrate knowledge of electromotive force (e.m.f.) production
    • 25072 Apply electromagnetic theory to a range of problems
    • 29465 Apply knowledge of electrical safety and safe working practices for electrical workers
    • 29466 Demonstrate knowledge of legislation and Standards governing electrical workers
    • 29467 Demonstrate knowledge of the electrical industry ethical work practices

    Career Opportunities: Many of our graduate gain full-time employment in the electrical trade. They have completed apprenticeships and are now registered electricians.

    Satisfactory Completion: To satisfactorily complete New Zealand Certificate in Electrical Engineering Theory (Level 3) and be awarded this qualification the student must have successfully:

    • Achieved all of the graduate outcomes in the graduate profile showing competence to a minimum of 120 credits in accordance with the programme schedule for the New Zealand Certificate in Electrical Engineering Theory (Level 3).
    • Completed required practical and theoretical course work and assignments.
    • Hold a current First Aid certificate at the completion of the programme

    Entry criteria

    Applicants under 20 years:

    • Candidates must have achieved the NCEA Level 1 in Mathematics, English, and Physics or General Science, or equivalent qualifications.
    • Desire to work in the Electrical Engineering industry

    Applicants over 20 years:

    • Applicants over the age of 20 years at time of enrolment will be considered where they can demonstrate the ability to succeed in a programme. Examples of demonstration of ability to succeed are the provision of evidence of successful completion of a programme of study at Level 1 or above in a related discipline, and/or employment in the related sector for one or more years.

    Language Requirements

    • IELTS General or Academic Score of 5 with no band score lower than 5
    • TOEFL Paper based test, pBT, Score of 500 with an essay score of 4 TWE
    • TOEFL Internet based test, iBT, Score of 35 with a writing score of 20
    • University of Cambridge English Examinations FCE or FCE for schools with a score of 154. No less than 154 for each skill.
    • NZCEL Level 3 with an endorsement of either General, Workplace, or Academic
    • Pearson Test of English, Academic, PToE Academic score of 36
    • City and Guilds IESOL B1 Achiever with a score of 43
