    Programme Overview

This clinically focused programme is for registered nurses working in primary health care and community settings, including aged care for a minimum of two days per week. Enhance your practice and gain further knowledge and skills that reflect your specialty practice area.

    Programme Outline

The Postgraduate Certificate in Primary Health Care Specialty Nursing consists of two papers: Primary Health Care and Health Promotion, and Praxis in the Community Setting (you choose one of the three strands).

Taught tutorial days are supported by online learning, with tutorial blocks being delivered in Porirua and Auckland (Well Child/Tamariki Ora strand only).

HSC8501: Primary Health Care and Health Promotion (60 credits)

This course will enable you to gain an in-depth understanding of primary health care, community practice and health promotion. You will explore the theory and policy that influences service delivery, with a focus on evidence based practice, community development, population health, the application of te Tiriti o Waitangi to primary healthcare, and health literacy.

Praxis in the Community Setting (60 credits)

    There are three strands available:
    HSC8502: Population and Personal Health
    HSC8504: Well Child/Tamariki Ora
HSC8506: Health of the Older Adult

This course enables you to gain increased knowledge through praxis (the application of theory and research knowledge by reflective practice) and the demonstration of nursing competencies in your area of practice. Explore literature that is relevant to the variety of ways that health is explained in the New Zealand context and work appropriately with clients from their own perspective/world view.
