This programme is intended for learners of English as an additional language who wish to pursue further English language study in an academic context.
Graduates will have the language skills required to communicate independently and effectively in familiar and some less familiar situations with fluency and flexibility in academic settings.
This programme is at a level comparable to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) mid B2.
This programme allows educational institutions to make informed judgements regarding the level at which the graduate can use English for academic purposes.
Graduates of the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Academic) (Level 4) will have the English language skills to work in positions that require:
This certificate builds on the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Applied) (Level 3) and can lead to the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Academic) (Level 5).
This certificate may facilitate meeting the language requirements for many vocational and undergraduate programmes/courses and specialised fields of study requiring lower and/or New Zealand Qualifications Framework Level 5, for entrance, depending on the focus of the programme leading to this qualification.
a) Candidates must be 16 years or older.
b) Candidates must have achieved NZCEL (Applied) (Level 3) or
c) Have achieved a score of IELTS 5.5 across all bands, or equivalent.
d) Candidates must take part in a selection interview and will be required to take a placement test to determine their current English Language level and learning goals.
e) Candidates must demonstrate a reasonable chance of success in the programme.
English Language Requirements
Placement in this programme will be determined by the Centre for Languages Placement Test according to language proficiency.
