This 20 week introductory certificate programme is ideal for you if you wish to develop your skills in Media Arts. You will learn the basic knowledge and skills you'll need to start your career in Visual Arts and Design, Communication, or Commercial Music.
The programme includes generic study skills as well as specialist skills in visual arts, music or communication. If you successfully complete the Certificate, you will be eligible to compete on merit for entry into the Bachelor of Media Arts, Bachelor of Communication, or Bachelor of Design programmes.
What You'll Learn
If you meet the selection criteria for more than one endorsement, it is possible to study electives from different endorsements.
Four Core Modules:
If Visual Arts is your chosen pathway, you will choose four of the following five elective modules:
Moving Image, Painting / Sculpture, Photography, Graphic Design, Fashion Design Studies
You will be introduced to existing practices and procedures associated with each of the Visual Art modules. You will also develop your ability to analyse and interpret your own work in the medium in relation to cultural and historical contexts.
After completion, you can compete for entry into the Bachelor of Media Arts programme.
If Commercial Music is your chosen pathway, you will complete the following four modules: Song writing, Music Technology, Music Studies, Performance.
You will be introduced to the foundations of music theory and to a wide range of music and sound technologies. You will also create and perform your own composition. Modules are taught in relation to established professional practices with a mix of theory and practical assignments.
When you have successfully completed this certificate, you'll have developed skills for understanding, writing and recording music using industry technology, plus the opportunity to create a portfolio of your recordings. After you have successfully finished this Certificate, you can compete for entry into the Bachelor of Media Arts programme.
If Communication is your chosen pathway, you will complete the following four modules: Journalism, Moving Image, Public Relations, Radio Studies.
In each of the Communication modules you will be introduced to the conventions associated with the industry. You will learn a range of practical skills and develop your ability to analyse and interpret your own work.
When you've successfully completed this course, you are welcome to apply for entry into the Bachelor of Media Arts, Bachelor of Communication or Bachelor of Design programmes.
12 credits at NCEA Level 1 in English, or Equivalent qualification
12 credits at NCEA Level 1 in English and 12 credits at NCEA Level 1 in Practical Art, Design or Photography, or Equivalent qualification

IELTS score of 6.0 in the academic band, with no individual band score lower than 5.5; or equivalent; or TOEFL IBT score of 60 or TOEFL PBT score of 550 or Pearson score of 50
